Seattle-ite Named Beer Drinker of the Year Tom Schmidlin of Seattle, WA has been crowned the 2006 Beerdrinker of the Year. In a very tight competition, Schmidlin used his deep beer knowledge, wit, and a few choice bribes to win the crown.
A few of the judges’ questions included: "If you were going hunting with Dick Cheney, what beer would you bring?" "If terrorists threatened to wipe out the world’s hop crop, would you negotiate with them, and what one hop variety would you save?"; and "How many dimples are in a bottlecap?"
| Mondial Features Beer, Conferences | | The Mondial de la bière will hold its 13th annual festival May 31 to June 4, 2006 at Windsor Station in downtown Montréal. The festival features tastings of beers from around the world, Quebec ciders, and gourmet food and cheese. The beer list features 15 U.S breweries including Elysian, Jolly Pumpkin and Russian River with an accent on barrel aging. European breweries such as Brasserie des Franches Montagnes (Switzerland), Brasserie Holl (France), and Brasserie de Rulles (Belgium) will be represented. Quebec’s many microbreweries will be showcases and Montreal’s Dieu du Ciel brewpub, as usual, is making a special fest beer, a Kellerbier — unfiltered lager. Another special fest beer brewed with blackberries and honey is being brewed by Le Grimoire. The MBeer conference returns for a second year featuring half a dozen industry professionals who will share their expertise on the finer points of the effervescent beer industry. They are Sam Calagione of Dogfish Head Brewery, Phil Markowski of Southampton Publick House, Jérôme Rebetez of Brasserie des Franches Montagnes, Switzerland, and Pete Slosberg of Wicked chocolate. Open debates and cooking and tasting demonstrations are also part of the action. Admission to the festival is free; tasting is by token. For more information, see www.festivalmondialbiere.qc.ca. They have added six 2500 gal. s.s. unitanks, a brand new double pre-evac, 20 spout bottle filler, a bulk glass depalletizer, a case erector, a new labeler, a Hartness Drop Packer, and other packaging equipment for the bottling line that will increase the line speed from 100 to 140 bottles per minute. To celebrate their anniversary, the brewery will throw a party on Saturday, June 3, from noon to midnight. There will be brewery tours, grillin’ outside, prizes, wacky games and introducing the Penn Brewery 20th Anniversary Bock Beer. | ...and 15 for Otter Creek | | Otter Creek brewed their first batch of beer 15 years ago in a small rented warehouse in Middlebury, VT. Now in their own bigger and better brewery, brewmaster, Steve Parkes, has brewed a rich, bold and hoppy India Pale Ale to celebrate the milestone. The new brew will be available on draft, and in 22 oz. bottles, featuring label artwork commissioned especially for the anniversary. | |
