Ever heard of the Magic Pyramid? You will.
Vermont’s Magic Hat brewery is purchasing Pyramid Brewing, which owns breweries in Seattle and Berkeley, CA. Other likely mergers could be Port/Shipyard; Stone/Boulder; Drake’s and Goose Island; Flying Dog and Great Dane. Just kidding…maybe you can come up with other brewery names that would work well together. Rumor mill: Larry Bell is selling his brewery to Anheuser-Busch. Not much new here. How many times did we hear that Sam Adams was selling to A-B.? Don’t hold your breath. Boston will have its work cut out next year to come close to equaling the job that San Diego did in hosting the Craft Brewers Conference this past April. People are still talking about the 100-tap tike bar built by the San Diego Brewers Guild. But, read what Boston’s got going for it in the next issue of ASN, in pubs June 1. More rumor mill: Dogfish Head revolutionary leader Sam Calamine allegedly turned down an offer from Montreal’s Dieu du Ciel brewpub for a rap session saying his rapping skills had atrophied. ‘Sup Sam, too much time on the Beer and Wine tour? Marnie got yo rap? Indeed Sam has been busy promoting his new book, He Said Beer, She Said Wine, with co-writer sommelier Marnie Old. The pair will be doing their schtik at a Mondial de la biere food, beer and wine reception May 30. (If you’re planning on going to Mondial, be sure to check out our VIP package; click on homepage, left column). Rollerblading down the West Side the other afternoon, I ducked into Chelsea Brewing. Brewers Chris and Mark proudly had me a taste a Bourbon-barrel-aged version of their 1,000 brew, the oxymoronic Imperial Mild. At 11+%, it was way, way too smooth for 3:30 p.m. I brought along a Lagunitas Lucky 13 which had recently arrived in the mail. This mondo red ale certainly put our hop buds back in alignment. Mark was wearing a Boundary Bay t-shirt given to him by owner Ed who had been up specking Magic Hat’s old brewhouse. So it could end up in Seattle, home of Pyramid which, as mentioned, the Hat just bought. Synchronicity? I continued on and saw owner Dave Broderick standing behind the open windows of the Blind Tiger. He had just returned from a 4-month long road trip in his airstream trailer. Roguester Sebbie was there and Chris from Rogue Ales. Oysters, fresh from Yaquina Bay (Newport, OR – Rogue’s home) were on the menu along with astonishing 26 taps of Rogue Ale. Some of them – like Frog in the Rye -- were from Rogue’s satellite brewpub in Issaquah. Chris said Issaquah offerings will continue to be available in NYC, as will their spirits. Love and Hoppiness, an unfiltered Pilsener first brewed for brewer John Maier’s wedding was the first to kick. Black Brutal Bitter was unique. A beer named Brewer, actually a 2006 Double Mogul, was subliminal.
