Raison d’etre:
We want to make great beer and recreate the ties that bind a community to its local brewery. Prior to founding Harpoon in 1986, Rich and I had been fortunate enough to travel to other parts of the world where those ties still existed. The had faith that our friends and neighbors would come to appreciate the benefits of fresh, local beer brewed with only the finest ingredients. We are also determined to keep the business fun and run an organization that gives back to the local community.

Biggest obstacles overcome:
There have been several over the years. Our first bottling line was a real challenge. It did not work well, but we did not have the resources to replace it. Somehow we made it through, but it taught us important lessons about operating a brewery. At several other points during our 18 years in business, we have faced direct challenges from much larger companies with many more resources. By staying true to our vision and focusing on our own business, we have not only survived these challenges but emerged stronger as a result. Our ability to overcome these obstacles is due to the great beer that we make and the wonderful people that we have working at the brewery.

Reason to drink Harpoon:
At Harpoon we have always worked hard to make great beer and to welcome our customers to the brewery. Each of our beers is formulated to provide a choice to our drinkers that did not exist before. We draw on brewing tradition to make our beers, but we always add our own vision of how that style can be improved.

What makes Harpoon unique:
Like many other breweries, Harpoon has donated numerous amounts of beer and money to charitable organizations throughout our community because we believe in being a good neighbor. A year ago we started a program called Harpoon Helps, a community service program made up of Harpoon employees and Friends of Harpoon (members of a customer loyalty program). Every couple of months, Harpoon Helpers participate in a "mission." HH has sponsored blood drives at our Boston brewery; sorted food at the American Red Cross, and raised money for the Angel Fund and ALS research.
The finest quality of beer is of utmost importance to Harpoon, but the quality of life for those in our community around us is just as important. Thankfully, the people out there that drink Harpoon feel the same way.
