This is a feature article idea of which I have been trying to convince my publishers of its worthiness. The idea is that a "chain" brewpub or beer bar is looked down upon simply because its ownership is headquartered elsewhere or the business name has been franchised. Rubbish, I say! I am a devout follower of such places as Rock Bottom, Old Chicago, Flying Saucer, Winking Lizard, Iron Hill, John Harvard's and on and on. Each place is kind of the same, but at the same time it is different. Any place that has food is going to have its own kitchen staff and that makes a huge difference. The same way with a brewpub and its brewer. An analogy - I was in the Navy for an abbreviated career, aboard four different ships in that time. The cooks got the same food as the rest of the fleet, but did that mean that our meals were exactly the same as what was being served at the next pier over? NO! Is the Sixth Fleet a "chain"? If you shake your head in the negative, then you begin to see my point. Now imagine this rant, I mean, reasoned point-of-view as a feature length article in your favorite brewspaper and involving interviews with owners, brewers, and patrons.
